An animal may need help if –

· Able to approach more easily than expected.

· They appear lethargic, lazy and tired.

· They move slowly or appear to be in pain (salivating/panting)

· Koalas, possums, gliders, flying-foxes and other wildlife commonly seen in trees staying on the ground.

· Nocturnal animals/birds out during daylight.

How to help injured or sick wildlife

Check the area for threats to you and the animal. Don’t put yourself or wildlife in further danger.

Assess animal from a distance initially.

If you feel comfortable –

· Contain the animal securely so that it does not injure itself further or injure you.

· If you are worried about picking up an animal, get someone to help.

· Use a towel to place over the animal and gently pick it up.

· Keep the animal warm, in the dark and in a quiet place.

Have as little contact with the animal as possible.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PICK UP A BAT OR SNAKE. Bats may carry and pass on lyssavirus. Only immunised specialists can collect bats and snakes.

Do not offer food or water unless advised to do so by a vet or rehabilitator.

Always wash your hands thoroughly after handling wildlife.

To assist for future release, note:

Exact location that you found the animal and date/time of collection.

As a general rule, a pillowcase with ties at the opening end is a good item to carry in your car. Most animals or birds will fit inside a pillowcase, which can then be tied securely to prevent escapes. This is important, as an animal or bird that is just stunned may well become distressed when it gets its senses back, and attempt to escape from your car.

Remove any dead animals from the road, if it is safe to do so, and place them on the verge. This will help signify to other people that the animal has been checked. It also saves 15 people from stopping! Local councils will collect carcases if they are notified of their whereabouts.
